Coloured Leaf Embroidery Video Tutorial.

What is the Fly Stitch?

The Fly Stitch is a simple and decorative stitch that makes a “V” shape. It’s often used to create leaves, flowers, or other natural shapes in embroidery. This stitch looks like a bird’s wings, and the loop at the top of each “V” gives it a nice, textured appearance. The Fly Stitch is easy to learn and adds a beautiful design element to your embroidery projects, especially for making leaves.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before we begin, make sure you have all your materials ready! You’ll need:

  • Embroidery fabric
  • Embroidery hoop
  • Embroidery floss in the colors of your choice (grey, green, yellow, or rose red)
  • Needle and scissors

Once you have everything ready, you can begin by sketching a simple leaf shape onto your fabric using a fabric pen or pencil.

Step 2: Preparing for the Fly Stitch

To start the Fly Stitch, bring your needle up through the fabric at the bottom of your leaf design. Make sure to work from the top of the leaf, moving upwards, creating a line where you’ll place your stitches.
Tip: Keep your fabric taut in the hoop to make stitching easier.

Step 3: Create the Fly Stitches

Now, it’s time to create the Fly Stitches! Follow these steps:
  1. First do a straight stitch and then start by bringing the needle up through the fabric to create the first “V” shape.
  2. Move the needle diagonally to the left, pulling the thread tightly, and form the left side of the “V”.
  3. Next, make the right side of the “V” by bringing the needle back up and pulling the thread taut.
  4. Repeat this process along the shape of your leaf to create a row of “V” stitches, filling the outline of the leaf.

Please Check the below pics:

Tip: Make sure each “V” shape is evenly spaced for a neat and symmetrical look.
As you work, remember to vary the stitch directions to create a textured and realistic look for the leaf. Once your leaf is completely stitched, finish by securing the thread at the back of the fabric and trimming any excess threads.

Congratulations!

You’ve just completed your beautiful leaf embroidery with the Fly Stitch. Well done!   This stitch adds a lovely textured and natural feel to your designs. You can now use this technique to create more intricate floral designs or even combine it with other embroidery stitches for more advanced projects.
